Pro-choice.
Today in Portugal is taking place a countersignature. The government, for the 2nd time in 9 years, wants to know if the Portuguese agree with the law of the abortion that exists since 1983, or if it would be time to change it.
This is what our law says about the abortion:
Article 139.ยบ (Abortion)
1 - Who, for any means and without permission of the pregnant woman, makes her an abortion will be punished with arrestment from 2 to 8 years.
2 - Who, for any means and with permission of the pregnant woman, make her an abortion, except on the cases foreseen on the following article [ie, violation, bad formation of the embryo or mother's health in danger], will be punished with arrestment up to 3 years.
3 - Into the same penalty incurs the pregnant woman that, except on the cases foreseen on the following article, gives permission to the abortion made by third, or that, for proper cause or other, makes an abortion.
4 - If the abortion foreseen on the items 2 and 3 will be practised to prevent the social disapproval of the woman, or for reason that significantly decreases the guilt of the agent, the applicable penalty will not be longer than 1 year.
5 - When the abortion results on the death or serious injuries for the body or the physical or psychic health of the pregnant woman, if it was made on the terms of the previous pointed items or if the death or injuries were caused beacuse of the means used, and if the one that made the woman an abortion could have predicted the consequences of that behavior, the maximum of the applicable penalty to this will be increased in 1/3.
6 - The aggravation foreseen on the previous item is applicable to the person who usually dedicates hiself to the illicit practice of abortion or that practiced illicit abortion with lucrative intention.
This is what our law says. And now we are voting on:
YES - the law should be changed because the woman who makes an abortion shouldn't be punished for doing it, and consequently we should create means and conditions to do it.
or
NO - the law shouldn't be changed and the woman who aborts should be punished for it, as well as those who help it, and we shouldn't create means nor conditions to do it.
I'm tottaly pro-choice. And what surprises me is how some "No" appologists are using such stupid arguments that aren't even in cause. What is in cause here is to finish the punishment of the woman who aborts. Women in Portugal aren't even arrested nowadays because they have aborted, that is, the law isn't being applied at a 100% (maybe because some of them just die...). What we want here is to change what is written and to give conditions to these women so that we can stop them from dying and from suffering huge injuries beacause they have aborted.
Also I think it's very stupid that we don't even talk about Men. Where are the men? Didn't the sperm came from them? Why is it that in our law only women should be punished as well as those who helped aborting?
But the "No" appologists, on an extremely ignorance, just say that women are killers and murders, because it's a life there. (The same people that eat fish and meat. They are also lives, aren't they? Or are animals less lives just because they are "irrational". Isn't an embryon also irrational? Ok, maybe I shouldn't be melting these to subjects. So let's just move on.)
Some people just made some lovely flyers with Virgin Mary crying tears of blood. The blood represented embryons dying. And they gave them to children at school.
If abortion is like hollocaust (like some portuguese No defenders said), then this flyer thing is a stupid "propoganda". Like Hitler's.
Abortion is a REALITY. No one WANTS to do it. It causes psychic and physical problems and unless you are really sado-maso you would like to do it. But we've got to accept that it exists and create conditions to that reality!
Shit always happens. The condom wasn't alright, the pilule didn't work out. And we don't have economic conditions to support a child. Or simply we DON'T WANT the child at that time. There is no other choice sometimes.
I don't know if someone will read this till the end, but I had to express my opinion somehow. It makes me sick to listen to people saying that abortion is crime, that it is killing lifes. Specially when it comes form people who have already aborted.
Or from people who have money to abort in Spain, with real conditions.
